Kill the Queen
Everleigh is seventeenth in line to the throne, doing all of the busywork of a mediocre dignitary. When the evil Princess Vasilia, second in line to the throne, kills Queen Cordelia, along with most of the royal Blair family, Everleigh is closer to the throne than she’d ever thought she’d be.
Pitched off a cliff and left for dead, Everleigh finds a gladiator troupe led by an old family friend. If she ever hopes to survive, Everleigh must train her hardest and kill the queen.
This fantasy adventure novel was a page-turner, albeit with a fairly predictable plot. Where most fantasy novels feature a hero or heroine who has no magical powers, and then discover they have magical powers, Everleigh knows she has no magic, but she is immune to magic and can use her immunity to dampen the powers of others. Also, she has a keen sense of smell that can detect magic, emotion, poison, or anything else convenient to the plot.
This novel had some creative ideas and was quite an enjoyable read. The action-packed story made the pages go by quickly, but there wasn’t anything particularly unique to take it to the next level. However, I would read the next books in the series and possibly seek out other works from this author.
